The Application Process

How to Get Started:

The Initial Idea

When beginning your independent study, the most important factor to keep in mind is what you are truly passionate about. It is important to make sure the project you have chosen is one which can be pursued with focus, determination, and consistant interest through one, or multiple terms. As these projects minimally last one full term, your project must be a multi-step process, ultimately leading to a final demonstration of knowledge and a greater understanding of the chosen subject.

Starting off, I was aware of my interest in science, and particularly, the science of the brain. As my Summer Observership sparked my interest in Neuro-Oncology, I decided to take the initiative and approach one of the doctors I had been shadowing, Dr. Gerstner, and personally ask for other opportunities to learn and/or get involved with the field during my school year. Graciously, she invited me to take part in this research project which she planned to conduct. I was thrilled about the opportunity and due to my fascination and interest, I knew this would be an appropriate choice for an Independent Study.
